Universal Ear

Graeme Cole

UNIVERSAL EAR is a lost adventure serial charting Harley Byrne’s ongoing mission: to capture and make available for download “all the world’s music, ever.”

Each episode sees Byrne travel to another time and place, where his efforts to find and record humanity’s strangest musics are hindered by his arch-enemy, Being, mysterious mistress of disguise.

We at L’Institute Zoom are attempting to reconstruct the missing films, as well as Byrne’s real-life memoirs from which the serial is adapted.

Graeme Cole is a filmmaker, writer, and artist. Working mainly with Super 8 and other consumer formats, his films take the language of narrative-based genre movies and infect them with an absurdist sensibility. By adjusting the rules of the genre and inventing new ones, Mr Cole evokes a parallel world with an alternative cinema. A world where George Kuchar and Shūji Terayama play the multiplexes. His work celebrates the beautiful folly of humanity by integrating the flaws of our thinking into the structure and aesthetic of each movie. Meta-narratives and open-source laboratory work expand and re-categorize the parameters of Mr Cole’s universe. In September 2013, Mr Cole became the first UK filmmaker to participate on the MFA program at Béla Tarr’s Film.factory, making the movies Epizoda?, Murmurs, and Panic & Disgust in the 2015th Year under Mr Tarr’s mentorship. In  2016, he established his own roaming absurdist art film academy, Unfound Peoples Videotechnic, as part of a residency at Kino Klub Split, supported by Arts Council England. In 2017 he recommenced the (p)reconstruction of UNIVERSAL EAR, a lost time-travel serial of the future, as EMAP/EMARE Artist in Residence at Bandits-Mages.
